are you using C++? Compiling is slow enough, don't underestimate the effect of compile times on your productivity. There are lots of free backup solutions for your local workstations.
At work we use TFS set up to only have local copies of files we've changed. Every time I open a file which isn't cached it lags for a few seconds to go fetch it. Excruciating.
